The Department of Environment and Natural Resources regional office in Eastern Visayas (DENR-8) has seized illegally-cut lumber and vehicles used in the illegal activity in Samar.
DENR-8 Regional Director Leonardo Sibbaluca told reporters in an interview at his office in Tacloban, Leyte on Sunday that the series and relentless operations conducted over the weekend by the joint anti-illegal logging operation at Barangay Tinabanan, Marabut, Samar has confiscated a total of 1,793 board feet of illegally-cut lumber with an estimated value of P89,650.
Sibbaluca said those confiscated lumber were deposited in the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office in Catbalogan City, Samar and Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Sta. Rita, Samar for safekeeping and final disposition.
Sibbaluca also told reporters that the team composed of personnel form the DENR-8, Philippine Army, Land Transportation Office (LTO), local government unit and the media also seized 14 unregistered vehicles composed of nine units of single motorcycles, four units of motorcycles with sidecar and one multipurpose van.
Sibbaluca said the seized vehicles, which were allegedly used to transport illegally-cut lumber from the forested areas of Marabut town to the local buyers, are now impounded at the LTO compound in Tacloban.
He said that information, education and campaign materials were also distributed to the residents of Barangay Tinabanan and nearby areas urging them to support the intensified campaign of DENR-8 against illegal logging in Eastern Visayas.
