A soldier was killed while 10 others were wounded following an ambush staged by suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Patikul, Sulu on Thursday.
Capt. Jo-Ann Petinglay, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Western Mindanao Command (AFP-WestMinCom), said that the reported ambush took place at around 5:20 a.m. in Barangay Tado Bagua, Patikul, Sulu.
The name of the slain soldier has yet to be released by the AFP as of press time.
Petinglay said prior to the incident, troops from the 10th Infantry Battalion received information that suspected ASG bandits were spotted in the area with a hostage in tow.
Troops from the 10th ID were immediately mobilized. As they approached the area, about 15 to 20 armed men opened fire at the advancing soldiers while on board a vehicle.
