General Luna, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte – Everything is ready for the staging of the 2017 Siargao International Women’s Surfing Cup, which will be held next month in the famous “Cloud 9” in General Luna, Siargao Island, in Surigao del Norte province.
Siargao Island will be the host of the first ever World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) women’s event in the Philippines from May 2 to 6.
Boasting of a generous $10,000-prize purse and other consolation prizes prepared by the government, female surfers from Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, United States, Australia and Taiwan will be competing with local talents.
Surfing officials from Australia and Bali, Indonesia are also expected to arrive for the event.
“We also have the best surfers here (in the Philippines and Siargao) and ready to compete to the best surfers from other countries,” said General Luna Mayor Rusillon said.
Rusillon added the international surfing event was being supported by Surigao del Norte Governor Sol F. Matugas, Surigao del Norte Rep. Francisco F. Matugas II, and Department of Tourism-Region 13 Officer-In-Charge Regional Director Mary Jean Camarin.
Local officials here said the prize money will likely increase as more business groups and companies continue to signify their intention to help in the sponsorship and promotion of the event.
“Everything is being prepared and the waves will be ready,” said Rusillion. “We are happy that our women’s event will now be sanctioned by the WSL and we can’t wait for the first Cloud 9 waves to be conquered by these brave women.”
