Pro-life advocate and Buhay Partylist Rep. Lito Atienza yesterday lauded President Duterte for rejecting a policy providing for same sex marriage in the country.
Atienza welcomed Duterte’s pronouncements as a same-sex marriage as a rejection of the Western culture being propagated in the country.
A same sex marriage bill is currently pending in the House of Representatives.
Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has previously declared support for measures that would benefit the LGBT community. He has vowed to pursue a bill that would allow same sex union that would acknowledge the right of LGBTs to jointly own properties and resort to legal adoption of a child.
“President Duterte is correct in saying that same-sex marriages are not for us because we are a Catholic nation, aside from the legal aspect where the Civil Code provides for marriage between a man and a woman. Marriage should be for founding a family,” Atienza said.
Duterte reportedly aired his view against same sex marriage in a dialogue with Filipinos based in Myanmar where he is on a state visit.
“I respect the rights of two people sharing affection and material things, but to allow them to get married by law is not okay. Same-sex couples can share affection even without marriage,” Atienza explained.
