Cebu City – Thirty garbage loaders, tanods, and garbage truck drivers from barangays in Cebu City have tested positive for drug use.
The barangay workers took a drug test Tuesday on the recommendation of Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, who is also the deputy mayor for police matters.
Tumulak said he recommended the test so that barangay workers cleared of drug use will get back their monthly allowance from the city government.
The workers found positive for drug use were from barangays Sambag I, Pahina Central, and Santa Cruz. Pardo, Cogon-Pardo, Suba, Basak-San Nicolas, and Quiot.
Although the workers are not directly under the mayor’s office, Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he wanted those who failed the test to be fired to serve as a lesson to other employees.
Alice Utlang, head of the City Office for Substance Abuse Prevention, said the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and Philippine National Police were evaluating at least 11 of the 80 barangays of the city that were earlier reported to have been cleared of illegal drugs.
These barangays are San Antonio, Santa Cruz, Santo Niño, Malubog, Kalubihan, Sawang Calero, Sudlon 1, Tap-tap, Pamutan, Quiot, and Basak San Nicholas.
