Panelo: De Lima’s arrest indication of democracy at work

Published

By Genalyn Kabiling

The arrest of Senator Leila de Lima on drug charges is an indication of democracy at work in the country, according to Chief presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo.

Philippine Senator Leila De Lima, a former human rights commissioner who is one of Duterte's most vocal opponents, waves to her supporters after appearing at a court in Muntinlupa City, suburban Manila on February 24, 2017. The highest-profile critic of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's brutal drug war was arrested February 24 on charges supporters said were meant to silence her, but she vowed to keep campaigning against killings and "repression". / AFP PHOTO / NOEL CELIS

Shortly after De Lima was placed under police custody, Panelo  commended the  rule of law that is applied to all regardless of their power or influence in society.

“The arrest of Senator De Lima shows that the law is enforced regardless of who is the subject of a warrant of arrest whether the person is holding a high position in the government or has an ordinary status in society,” Panelo said.

“The majesty of the law shines triumphantly when a Senator of a Republic is arrested and detained on account of a criminal charge. Such is the working of a democracy,” he added.

Authorities earlier served the arrest warrant against De Lima in connection with her alleged involvement in the drug trade inside the national penitentiary. The former justice secretary allegedly took payoffs from drug lords to fund her senatorial campaign last year. De Lima has denied the allegations.

So you think D5 is innocent? Was the proliferation of drugs in Bilibid existed while D5 was with DOJ? Did D5 had an illicit affair with a married man? If you answer yes to these questions, then Panelo’s statement is correct. If no, then wake up and smell the coffee.

Democracy? What a travesty of justice by the Department of Injustice in collusion with a subservient judge just to settle an unpresidential vendetta for exposing EJK of the poor.
The SC should now step in to determine if the RTC judge who issued the warrant of arrest against Sen. De Lima accepted fabricated evidence, false testimonies and other falsified evidence; and to rectify this travesty of justice.
The integrity of the Judiciary and our judicial system is now a joke, in complete shambles considering that anyone can now have anyone arrested based on fabricated evidence, false testimonies and other falsified evidence or documents.

    • BRNXNY

Fabricated evidence so you think D5 is innocent? Just forget about the statements against D5 made by drug lord inmates. Is it true that there was proliferation of drugs inside the Bilibid prison while D5 was with DOJ? Did D5 had an illicit affair with a married man? If you answer yes to both questions, then RTC have the probable cause and the right to file charges against D5. If no, then wake up and smell the coffee

      • Gisingbayanko

Nonsense, who would believe convicts who’re totally controlled and beholden to the Bilibid authorities, DOJ and ultimately the Fentanyl addict himself. What a sham!

        • BRNXNY

Did you get offended wake up and smell the coffee? Gising? You either did not understand my statement or overalook what i said to disregard the convicts statements. A simple yes or no answer is what I asked.

Put her in jail until all her rights are stripped.

Leila the Halimaw and her yellow and LP allies are shouting to the whole world how injustice is being served by arresting her for non-bail criminal offense connected with. And here we are reading trollers who defend her as if there is no tomorrow. Of course, the same trolls ignore facts in recent history what Leila did when she was PNoy’s hatchet woman as DOJ Secretary when she illegally stopped the medical travel of Arroyo even if there existed a LEGAL tro in the case coming from the Supreme Court. Then there are the fabricated and manufactured papers which she produced against CJ Renato Corona and also the manufactured papers she prepared so the 3 Senators, Enrile, Revilla and Estrada cannot file for bail. She is also the brain behind filling charges to opposition personalities only in connection with the Napoles scam but intentionally excluded the most vindictive President who ever walked the Earth, PNoy allies in government. This is the same former DOJ who refused to listen to complaints against her friends in the PNoy administration. Reading troll comments is just like describing Leila as a saint and her patron PNoy as the resurrected Jesus Christ. In short, now that they, the yellows are in the defensive end, they all shout INJUSTICE but when they were still in power all what they did against our people are good and JUSTIFIABLE. No wonder the country will never move forward and can never move forward only because there are still many of us who are very short of thinking wisely, meaning they are DUMB.

    • ARIKUTIK

De Lima’s selective persecution pricked commoners Senator Jinggoy Estrada but exempted the Elitist yellow Senator Drilon which is the biggest crocodile in Senate. She earned the commoners ire which now ensures De Lima’s incarceration for lifetime in prison as demanded by the commoners with out forgiveness because Narco-queen protector is unforgivable.

The whole article was simply propaganda… You can make all the arrests you like but no one of consequence goes to jail for long. It is always insufficient evidence. This is just another melodrama for the dumb masses. Look at the Arroyo. fabricated neck problem no jail, but had to wear a neck brace. Judges let her go. Binay, Trillianes. Almost weekly some government official is caught with his hand in the pork barrel, Nothing happens . Men are Murdered in groups of 44 Nothing happens… What F,,,en justice is there here. Oh yes the little shit steals bread he goes to jail for life.
