Camp Rafael C. Rodriguez, Butuan City – A retired judge was gunned down by two unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants at a local eatery in Surigao City Thursday, a flash report reaching the police regional headquarters here yesterday said.
According to Northeastern Mindanao Police Regional Office (PRO 13) Director Chief Supt. Rolando B. Felix, the victim was Victor Amalia Canoy, 70, former judge of Branch 29 of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) of the 10th Judicial Region in Surigao City.
Felix added that Canoy was about to buy lunch at the Catulay Eatery, located at the corner of Borja and Rizal Streets, when he was waylaid by the two suspects wearing black baseball caps.
The victim succumbed to multiple bullet wounds in the head.
A report by the Surigao City Police Station (SCPS) and Surigao del Norte PPO said the victim who was a resident of Canlanipa Homes, Barangay Canlanipa, Surigao City.
The ghastly shooting was witnessed by horrified costumers including the owner of the eatery, the report said.
“Based on the revelation of some witnesses, one of the gunman hurriedly walked at the back of the victim and shot him several times of unknown caliber pistol with muzzle believed to be a silencer,” Felix said.
“The victim then kept on crawling until he reached the suspect’s feet, but he was shot again several times on his head,” Surigao del Norte PPO report stated.
After the incident, the suspects immediately fled using the same Pink Mio single motorcycle without plate number, Surigao del Norte PPO report said.
PO2 Hertenito C. Cubilan, a beat patrol officer of SCPS who was in the vicinity, responded and shouted at the suspects to halt, but one of the suspects leveled his gun at him.
“P02 Cubilan then shoot the back rider hitting the back portion of the latter’s body. He continued to shot the suspects but he was preempted when a tricycle crossed the street which covered his sight until the suspects successfully fled heading towards Kaskag Village direction in Barangay Washington of this same city,” Surigao del Norte PPO report said.
Responding police force from SCPS found in the scene of crime four empty cartridge cases of 9mm pistol and three live ammunitions of 9mm pistol, Surigao del Norte PPO report added.
