Maasin City, Southern Leyte — Prospects are bright that the abaca industry in this city and province will make a comeback as the top source of income for highland farmers.
Last Friday, some 2,000 tissue-cultured suckers of abaca inosa variety were turned over to the provincial nursery in Barangay Panan-awan, this city.
The new, disease-free breed from Abuyog was acquired through the efforts of Rep. Roger Mercado that was coursed to the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (Philfida), it was learned.
Belinda Lagrama, Philfida head in Southern Leyte, reminded the 32 recipient punong barangays to take good care of the new plantlets.
“There is still a bright future for abaca in the city and the entire province,” Lagrama said in remarks before the ceremonial turnover.
The plantlets will spend a few weeks in the nursery until they are strong enough to withstand the stress of travel prior to actual planting.
Mayor Nacional Mercado vowed to extend financial and technical support to the first batch of recipient barangay officials.
