A bomb exploded near the city hall of Lamitan, Basilan on the evening of Rizal Day, December 30. No one was reportedly injured.
The improvised explosive device was placed near an exit gate of the city hall.
ABS-CBN News reported that bomb fragments placed in a pipe-like container and wrapped in paper were recovered in the area by bomb disposal authorities.
While the suspect is still unidentified, Lamitan vice mayor Roderick Furigay told ABS-CBN News that a terrorist group associated with Abu Sayyaf is responsible for the detonation.
Security has been beefed up around town, with police checkpoints already deployed in several areas.
The blast happened less than a week after a similar explosion occurred near the city chapel but left no one hurt, GMA News reported.
