Camp Ruperto Kangleon, Palo, Leyte — Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Eastern Visayas District Director Supt. Marvin Marcos belied reports he is being used by politicians and top police officials whom Albuera, Leyte, Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. named as drug lord protectors.
Marcos said he does not know Sen. Leila de Lima, one of the politicians being linked by Mayor Espinosa to drug trafficking in an affidavit he supposedly executed before he was killed in his jail cell last Saturday by a CIDG team.
“We are not being used by any interested group, either politicians or PNP officials linked by Mayor Espinosa in his affidavit,” Marcos told Manila Bulletin.
He insisted that Espinosa and fellow inmate Raul Yap inside the Leyte Sub-Provincial Jail in Baybay City were killed during a legitimate operation.
He said the raiding team was serving the search warrant issued by Basey, Samar, Regional Trial Court Branch 40 Judge Tarcelo Sabarre Jr.
Marcos said the CIDG secured the warrant in Samar because Espinosa was a high-value target.
He said the mayor was still into the illegal drugs trade even while he was locked up at the Baybay jail.
Jail officials, however, said no drugs were found inside the jail.
