Butuan City – Villagers in the nine towns of Siargao Island, especially poor residents, have started receiving free surgical services from the combined efforts of the provincial government of Surigao del Norte and the Department of General Surgery of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) of Cebu.
The medical teams of the provincial government and VSMMC positioned at the Siargao District Hospital in Dapa town last Friday and started serving the island villagers.
The specialists included nine doctors on general surgery, three anesthesiologists, an internal medicine specialist and two on obstetrics and gynecology specialists. The team was led by Dr. Rey Risner Obenza and Dr. Catherine Joyce Magno.
As of yesterday, a total of 24 major operations were conducted during the three-day mission.
On the other hand, 70 patients had also undergone minor excision of cyst during the mission.
“This is our continuing program to provide free health services to the poor residents in the island especially those who need surgical intervention not only in this island but also in mainland,” Surigao del Norte Gov. Sol F. Matugas said.
