Iloilo City – A Chinese firm is doing a two-month feasibility study for a proposed monorail system in this city.
“If viable, this project may address the city’s transportation concerns,” said Mayor Mabilog during the August 22 signing of the agreement for the study, which will be conducted by BYD Auto Industry Co. Ltd.
Mabilog said the proposed monorail can be an economic booster and at the same time ease traffic congestion in the regional capital of Western Visayas.
The monorail will run from Iloilo City to the towns of Sta. Barbara and Cabatuan, where the Iloilo International Airport is located.
If the monorail is not feasible in Iloilo, BYD General Manager for Asia-Pacific Liu Xueliang said BYD could look at other potential projects such as electric vehicles.
BYD is one of the Chinese companies vying to construct monorails in the country after the Duterte administration sought stronger economic ties with China.
Benjamin Zhao, BYD’s senior manager for Asia-Pacific, said the results of the feasibility study will be presented to the Iloilo City Council.
