Duterte rejects second-hand boats, military equipment from US

By Argyll Cyrus Geducos

President Duterte said he will no longer acquire second-hand military equipment from the United States (US) for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Addressing troops of the army’s 102nd Infantry Brigade in Barangay Igsoon, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay Friday afternoon, Duterte said government forces will win over terror groups in Marawi City using the best military equipment.

He said that he is willing to spend more money than just settle for the surplus of the United States including firearms and boats.

“During my time, wala na akong secondhand mga barko-barko. It has to be brand new,” Duterte said.

“Hindi na ako tatanggap ng mga equipment ng military na secondhand. Iyong ibinibigay ng Amerikano, ayaw ko na ‘yan. Even if I have to spend double the money,” he added.

In a bit of pep talk, Duterte assured the soldiers they would triumph over terror groups.

“Dito naman sa extremism, mananalo tayo. But we will have losses, ganon lang talaga ang buhay. Pero sabihin mo matalo tayo, imposible ‘yan,” Duterte said.

“Kumpleto na ‘yung jets natin. Kung buhayin pa ako ng Panginoon, you will have about 24 jet planes. Mag-acquire pa ako ng 12. Subukan ko,” he added.

He revealed that the country has two sources of firearms, but stopped short of mentioning which nations these were.

The Vietnam Coast Guard has taken delivery of its largest ever vessel to-date
Platform will significantly improve the service’s range and overall maritime surveillance capabilities

The Vietnam Coast Guard (Cnh Sát Bin Vit Nam: CSBV) has taken delivery of a Hamilton-class high-endurance cutter that was previously in service with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) for 48 years.

The vessel, which was formerly known as USCG Morgenthau (WHEC 722), was ceremonially handed over to Lieutenant General Nguyen Quang Dam, commandant of the VCG, on 25 May at USCG Base Honolulu. Handing over the platform on behalf of the USCG was Rear Admiral Michael J Haycock, the service’s assistant commandant and chief acquisition officer. The vessel has since been renamed CSB-8020.

Jane’s reported in April 2017 that the US State Department was co-ordinating the transfer of the vessel through the Foreign Assistance Act, which allows for the “transfer of excess defence articles as a grant to friendly, foreign governments”. The Excess Defense Articles (EDA) database values the transfer at nearly USD8 million including vessel costs and “outfit and equipment”.

According to Jane’s Fighting Ships , the Hamilton class features an overall length of 115.2 m, an overall beam of 13.1 m, and a hull draught of 6.1 m. The platform has a top speed of 29 kt and a standard range of 9.600 n miles at 15 kt. It can accommodate a crew of 162 including 19 officers, and one helicopter on the flight deck.

While in USCG service, the vessel was armed with one 76 mm naval gun as a primary weapon, two Orbital M242 Bushmaster dual-feed chain guns, and one 20 mm Raytheon close-in weapon system (CIWS). A video and images of CSB-8020’s transfer ceremony released by the USCG suggest that the vessel has retained its 76 mm gun but it is unclear if other weapon systems have been included in the transfer, although this is unlikely.

11 days of fighting! His military still is trying to drive a small band of Muslim terrorist out of Marawi. Their flimsy reason: The terrorist are using human shield.

Does no good having brand new weapons if you have inept people using ithem…….

An insightful analysis from an armchair general who isn’t even in ground zero to begin with.

So don’t make statements that makes you incredibly stupid, as your idiocy is shown for all to see. I bet you want them to fire and get collateral damage in the process.

Brilliant idea! If the commanders on site are like you, the conflict would be long over. The Du should make you a military consultant…….

MAdaldal ka at mayabang subukan mong pumunta sa Marawi City at tingnan ang actual situation bago manghusga.
