Tacloban City – The significance of conservation, protection, and sustainable management of Philippine coastal and marine resources will be highlighted in the nationwide celebration of Month of the Ocean this May, a report from the DENR 8, based here said.
DENR 8 Regional Director Leonardo Sibbaluca told Manila Bulletin that this year’s celebration, which is anchored on the theme “Tayo at ang Karagatan,” promotes the undeniable significance of the ocean to human well-being.
It will also show the functions and services provided by the ocean and its ecosystems such as coastal protection, fisheries production, and recreational, educational, and aesthetic values which contribute to the country’s tourism sector, he added.
Director Sibbaluca added that DENR Region 8 will lead a beach forest tree planting activities at Kawagan Island, Pambujan, Northern Samar to secure and improve the adaptive capacity of coastal communities against the ill-effects of climate change.
A lecture series on the significance of the ocean and its resources will be conducted for the employees of the DENR regional office.
Sibbaluca said that his office will also conduct Participatory Coastal Resource Assessments (PCRA) to evaluate the conditions of coastal resources in the different areas of Eastern Visayas.
