Japanese businessman killed hours after arriving in Manila
A Japanese businessman who had just arrived in the country was killed and his Filipino companion wounded when unidentified gunmen on board a motorcycle opened fire at their vehicle while cruising along Roxas Boulevard in Manila Thursday night.
The attack resulted in the death of 48-year-old Seiki Mizuno and the wounding of John Ong Desbarro, president of Oakwave Philippines Corporation, police said.
Investigation showed that the victims, along with three other Japanese nationals, were on board a white Toyota Alphard with license plates UHQ-319 when they were attacked as they reached the corner of Cuerteles Steet around 8:30 p.m.
Investigators said that the victims’ vehicle was caught in traffic when the assailants appeared.
The van’s driver Ronald Singsing, 41, told probers that the back rider first fired shots at the driver’s side and then got off the motorcycle and fired again at the passenger seat section of the van.
Mizuno died on the spot after he was hit in the neck while Desbarro sustained a minor wound in his head.
Singsing told police that prior to the incident, the group had their dinner at the Harbour View Restaurant near the Quirino Grandstand and were on their way back to Solaire Hotel in Pasay City, where Mizuno and the others were staying.
The suspects, who were reportedly wearing t-shirts, short pants, and a cap, immediately sped off in the direction of Pasay City.
Senior Inspector Fernildo De Castro, Manila Police District Homicide Section chief, said the Japanese businessmen had just arrived in Manila earlier the same afternoon to meet with Desbarro whose business in Cavite deals with manufacturing cable harnesses for gadgets.
The motive in the attack is still under investigation. Analou De Vera
