Tacloban City — More than 1,000 people took part in a “fun walk” through the major streets of this city in celebration of Earth Day.

Leonardo Sibbaluca, regional director for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) in Eastern Visayas, said the activity started at 5 a.m.

DENR organized the fun walk in coordination with the Environmental Management Bureau regional office, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau regional office, the police, colleges and universities, and civic organizations.

Sibbaluca said the earth fun walk is just one of the events meant to drum up interest in Earth Month.

Information campaigns will stir up awareness on environment concerns particularly on climate change. A month-long lecture series on the different programs and projects of the DENR are also being conducted at the DENR Regional Office, he added.

“As we celebrate Earth Month this April, and Earth Day on April 22, we enjoin the public to join us in our efforts towards a safe and sound environment, participate in our activities, be part of the celebrations by sharing your own little ways for Mother Earth,” Sibbaluca said.

Earth Day is an occasion to pay tribute to Mother Earth as well as to renew dedication to efforts to enhance awareness of the environment crises the world faces, he said.

Earth Day was launched on April 22, 1990 to mark a long-term “global commitment to building a safe, just and sustainable Planet” through the involvement of all the people.

President Corazon C. Aquino signed Proclamation No. 553 on April 16, 1990 in support of Earth Day.

In April, 2008, Presidential Proclamation 1481 was signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declaring April 22nd as the “Philippines’ Earth Day.”
