An estimated P2 billion will be generated by the city and province of Iloilo with the hosting meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Regional Director Helen Catalbas of the Department of Tourism (DOT-6) said this translates to current direct and indirect spending and even future investments.
Iloilo hosted the 22nd senior officials committee meeting for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) and the 17th ASCC Council Meeting.
After the meetings, ASEAN ministers and their families toured Iloilo.
“If our delegates, ministers, and senior officials like our place, they will promote it for investment and future visits in their official and personal capacities,” explained Catalbas.
“We look at the meetings as having a multiplier effect,” Catalbas added.
Catalbas said almost all sectors benefit—from hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, agriculture, and transportation.
DOT-6 also hopes that the hosting can eventually bring more tourists to Western Visayas region. Last February, Boracay Island hosted an ASEAN meeting while Bacolod City will also host another set on 21-23.
