Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro – This city was chosen as one of the two cities which represented the Philippines in the Eight East Asia Summit High Level Seminar on Sustainable Cities held recently in Chang Rai City, Thailand.
Calapan City Mayor Arnan C. Panaligan, who headed the delegation spoke on applicable environmental programs of his city and shared the best practices that he applied focusing on forest park initiatives, mangrove forest park development, establishment of marine protected areas, launching of most eco-friendly and PRO (progressive, responsible and outstanding) schools.
Panaligan made a speech during the summit with the theme, “The Power of Public Participation in Green Sustainable City Development: Scaling Up of Good Models”, which also tackled the city’s initiatives for green development, that includes urban development gardening and river rehabilitation.
The summit is an annual gathering of experts and policy makers on “clean, green and sustainable cities” in East and South East Asia.
Since 2010, high government officials and private partners from Asia had been meeting regularly about plans, innovations and their recommendations for the creation of environmentally sustained cities in Asia Pacifiic and the promotion of peace in the Southeast Asian region.
The summit had 13 countries- attendees including the Philippines which was represented by Calapan City and Davao City upon the recommendation of the Environment Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
