The Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) office in the Caraga region has been providing psychosocial help to victims of the 6.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Surigao City and its surrounding municipalities of Mainit, Malimono, San Francisco, and Sison last February 10.

Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo said the team of psychosocial support providers has already conducted sessions for quake victims in Surigao City and San Francisco, including fellow DSWD staff who have been affected by the calamity.

Support providers from local government units (LGUs) have also conducted separate psychosocial sessions.

Stressing the importance of helping quake victims deal with emotional trauma, Taguiwalo said, “Filipinos are known to be resilient, but not everyone has a strong coping mechanism when it comes to dealing with difficult situations such as this.”

She said DSWD-Caraga will carry out another set of sessions in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the field office continues to conduct relief operations to assist 3,331 families or 16,655 individuals who have been affected by the earthquake.

As of 4 p.m. Thursday, 1,567 families or 7,835 persons were still staying in open areas near their homes, while 74 families or 370 individuals were staying in tents at the Provincial Capitol grounds.

A total of 215 houses in the region were destroyed, while 3,042 were partially damaged.

DSWD-Caraga personnel have been making the rounds since the aftermath of the disaster, visiting affected barangays in the region to distribute family food packs and non-food items.

Only seven barangays out of the 54 affected in Surigao City have yet to get assistance -– barangays Capalayan, Danao, Ipil, Quezon, Sugbay island, Washington, and Taft — which DSWD-Caraga aims to reach as soon as possible.

A total of PHP10.31 million worth of assistance has been provided to the affected families. Of the amount, PHP9.24 million came from the department, PHP963,838 from LGUs and PHP112,350 from non-governmental organizations.
