Historic first under Duterte Presidency: PH ready to export corn

Updated

By MB Online

For the first time in history, the Philippines is ready to export corn to neighboring countries as corn harvests this year will breach the 5.6-million tons domestic requirement, according to Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol.

National Corn Program coordinator, Asst. Secretary Federico Laciste reported that in spite of the series of natural calamities which hit the country recently, including the 7-month El Niño, yellow and white corn harvest for 2017 is expected to hit 8.1-million metric tons.

The production of Cassava, which is lumped with corn in the animal feeds category, is seen to reach 570,000 metric tons and this will contribute further in stabilizing the corn and animal feeds supply in the Philippines.

president Duterte love to eat corn even myselt like it nothing wrong with that, not only rice and corn?cassava, sweet potatoes, bananas and other root crops are also good source of food, other people also eat only bread like the americans?

      • sivy2010

We Americans only eat bread? Alrighty then, guess I learned something today. lol

  • Yolanda Santos

Historic stupidity. Why should the Philippines export our excess corn when we are importing millions of tons of rice to feed our people? Why not substitute corn for rice to feed the millions of Filipinos who are starving?

    • Ambrosio

Speaking of stupidity! You hit yourself.. Most Filipinos eat rice than corn..

    • angpilipinongayon

You must be a legend yourself in the comment section of every news article. I am a farmer, and I can get more income if I’ll export my products, because exports will bring in more competitive prices than in the local market. Meaning, more exports, more income, more food in the table.

      You are really an idiot.

    • angpilipinongayon

Besides, if I’ll follow your faulty logic, the government must still BUY my corn and give them to the poor at the same price when exported. I myself a farmer is free of where to sell my agri product. Another thing is that we imported rice just because of the shortage here(We do not have enough rice to sell to the people).

Imported rice through NFA is still not free even if subsidized by the government. But when the government will purchase my agri product the same price as when exported, it will be more costly for the government to do that, so instead of doing that, imported rice is more cheaper and is accessible to more people because only a few percentage of the population eat corn.

        ahaha puso pre,
lam mo naman mga trolls, they will do everything to discredit an achievement not by their master.
ni hindi nga kagagawan ni digong yan pero dahil sa mga farmers, nagkataon lang na under his term,
yung mga me Hepa bleeding hearts nanaman

      • Oten

imported rice not cheaper but more kickback like the past administrations did and lack ok gov’t support from farm inputs to harvesting and post harvesting, marketing and farm to market roads.I am a farmer as well.in other countries farmers are rich!

        • angpilipinongayon

That’s true. However today, I trust Manny Piñol’s reform in the agri sector.

        • daboy

gone are the days of the corrupt officials, those were the days when the abnoy pres kept the corrupt and stupid Alcala who happened to be my kababayan….HE IS REALLY A GREAT SHAME to the people of Quezon, we condemned him for being corrupt and INUTILE LIKE HIS BOSS ABNOY

The government is already subsidizing NFA rice, may DSWD na at may 4P programs for the poor.

    • lance ceellot

wag na idYotlanda.. alam na namin style mo.. bulok na yan e.

      bobo ka talaga….

    • Lando Jordan

      bobo…bobo….bobo…bobo…bobo ka Yolanda Santos..

      • Yolanda Santos

gago ka, stupid assh*le Lando Jordan.

    • joshibeans

Well, for starters I won’t eat corn in place of rice. I don’t imagine myself eating my adobo or sisig with mashed corn. Secondly it’s called comparative advantage, look it up and third as many have already pointed out, corns are in excess. I’m sure you’d rather see the government hand out free corn for in the hopes that will magically solve the country’s problems. Life ain’t a fairytale sweetie and there’s a reason you and me aren’t the ones calling the big shots.

      • Yolanda Santos

Getting more Filipinos to eat corn is just a matter of educating and training our people that corn is good too to eat. Corn is great for flat bread and tortilla.

Corn is a main staple food in Mexico and other Latin countries, so why not make it acceptable too in the Philippines. If we can do that, we will import less rice and save our valuable dollar reserve.

        • daboy

you may eat corn as substitute for rice for as long as you want, wag mo na kami idamay, we love corn but not substitute for rice. your idea is good during the time of Abnoy, but it is obsolete now because corruption is no longer there. Mabuhay ka Sec Manny, keep it up and also the working Pres Digong Mabuhay kayo at mga di na limot na bayaning Farmers at Mangingisda

          • So Let Us Libo-on

he he,, then let this Yolanda Santos eat corn straight in all his meals,,, instead of consuming rice… let her be the first to demonstrate what he wants to point out… we knew, not all person eat corn only or rice only for their carbo needs…

          • So Let Us Libo-on

what secretary Pinol is doing is to point out,,,Philippines (country) can be self sufficient if our dear farmers are well taken cared of their basic need.. Water, Fertilizers, good seed variety, steady price in the market, post harvest facilities.. These things are taken cared of the DU30 president because the Gov’t money was really spent on these reqts. and it didnt fall on the pockets of corrupt politicians… no Gov’t Funds are wasted and were converted to abundant harvest to our dear farmers…

      • Maribel Romero

Spot on. you can’t force ppl to eat corn instead of rice but you can encourage them. The fact that we are exporting the excess simply means we take care of our own. Anyways – from where I come from. Milled corn is used as rice. We don’t mash it. The Visayas knows it especially the Cebu Provincial areas. Takes a lot of getting used to before your stomach accepts it. It has more nutritional value than rice and good for diabetics. But then again, rice still better when it comes to the palate.

    • Proper Perspective

There is a reason why it is called excess. An excess is a surplus meaning more than what is needed. Corn is perishable and has a self-life, if it is not consumed in a specific period, it rots. So before you accuse others of stupidity, perhaps you should examine yourself and the PNOY admin that fail miserably in the agriculture sector.

      • Yolanda Santos

We have a shortage of rice. PH is now the biggest importer of rice in the world. Why not substitute corn for rice so we don’t have to import so much rice?

        • Proper Perspective

You can’t force people to eat what what they are not used to.

    • Patrick Agustin

stupida de boba. lahat kokontrahin. sala sa init sala sa lamig. f**k you do, f**k you don’t.

Corn supply not enough = historic stupidity. The government is not doing enough for the corn farmers.

Corn Supply just right = historic stupidity. The government should exert more effort

Corn supply exceeded and can be exported = historic stupidity. The government should feed people with corn

Excess corn fed to people = historic stupidity. The government cannot boost rice production hence feeding them with corn.

FYI: Many people are already eating corn as substitute for rice. When the supply of corn exceeded, there are already enough supply for many people who eats corn and who WILL eat corn. What you want to come up with instead is make ALL people eat corn which is impossible. Because what you really is after is to discredit the efforts and achievements of this Government.

LEARN to give credit where credit is due and be thankful you have a working government. Go and do you part instead of harboring bad vibes.

    • Earl Mike Tiglao

Yolanda Santos, you are also an historic stupid person. Did you really understood what you have read before commenting like that??? “This is the first time that the Philippines will achieve a 120% corn sufficiency,” this is what the article said. There is 20% excess. Now if you will not sell the excess, what will happen to it? To be rotten again just like Abnoy did during his term??? Go back to your Economics subjects first.

      • Yolanda Santos

Hey asshole unggoy, how about shutting your ugly face up?

    • daboy

you know nothing, better think first before you type. learn first your economic subject.

  • Louie Operio

What causes the increase in the production of corn? with the current administration mostly focuses on drugs since it started the office for six months.. and with the agriculture department with low budget plus the calamities with the past days.. hmmm.

    • The war on drugs is mostly whats on TV but there are many PRRD programs that are very pro-farmer. Free irrigation, making deals with other countries to export our agri produce, stopping entities that are controlling prices on agri products, etc.

Of course, the president appointed a very hard-working and dedicated DA secretary who is trying to make full use of the small budget.

      • Louie Operio

Oh really, so the 6K++ dead is only on TV?, is the secretary superman or magician to increase the production and importation by himself without means & resource’s (Financial, Asset & Strategies) which he should have mentioned to attain the increase?.. Hmm

        • Where did I say that the 6K death toll is only on TV? I said that is what is mostly focused on the news and not the presidents other programs otherwise you would not have wondered what caused the sudden increase in production.

No, the DA secretary is not superman nor magician. He is simply installed in the post because he is COMPETENT and DEDICATED to his job and not because of stupid cronyism.

          • Louie Operio

And where the source of the info for this increase coming from ? “”according to Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol”” it’s like he already praise himself without further validation or strategies.. and then you say his dedicated, competent and not crony.. hmm

          • And I trust his claim because these are big words and if by harvest time, there is no corn export, he will only embarrass himself and he just can’t create a fake corn exportation scenario.

Yes, calling him competent and dedicated is only fair because I follow his page on Facebook and he is one of the most praised cabinet members and we are on a news thread about a historic first for corn export…

          • Louie Operio

Of course you are.. I also see his post, but i think it’s more of praising first, without further strategies.. which can easily attract followers, but dangerous at the end.. remember your claim that “he will only embarrass himself” could have been too late for our nation.. and as a journalist himself he’s good in handling these things (himself) ..

          • Oh they have strategies but why would the common people or the farmers care for a point-by-point powerpoint presentation of strategies when they already have results? I see results when he distributed free fiberglass boats to fishermen. I see results when they provide free irrigation to farmers. I see results when he distributed the tractors and equipments that was just rusting in DA backyard because of previous admin’s incompetence. I see results when this admin distributed lands to farmers in accordance with Agrarian Reform. It’s the results that puts food on the table and that is just in the first 7 months with about 5.5 years to go.

          • Louie Operio

Ngek.. is the strategies all about the point by point power point presentation? are the ones who read the news only the common farmers? now your also praising early.. hmm

          • If you’re still skeptic, that’s on you. I do agree with you about one thing that time will tell. We’ll just have to wait and see…

          • Louie Operio

Now your saying.. “time will tell” , but they already reap the accomplishments and praise themselves..without even stating how they do or did they are really the one who done it..

          • Duda ka kasi sa export of corn when hindi pa harvest time kaya time will tell…

Project: Distribution of free banka to fishermen
            How?: Buy bangka, give banka
Who did it? : Manny Pinol. May picture. ano yun photoshop?

If gusto mo detailed talaga, punta ka DA. May FOI naman, which is also one of the achievements of this administration.

          • Louie Operio

Ngek, were not discussing about bangka, its about their “Historic first under Duterte Presidency: PH ready to export corn” without the strategies..

          • “Irrigating corn fields, which is already being done in parts of Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley and Ilocos Region has proven to tremendously boost production per hectare which now has a national average of 4.7-metric tons per harvest.
In Central Luzon Region, Regional Director Andrew Villacorta reported yesterday that the highest harvest posted in an irrigated corn field was an astounding 15 metric tons, which is higher by 10 tons over the national average production.”

Edit: It seems disqus does not allow external links or something. In any case, you can find it in his facebook post.

          • Louie Operio

Still the report is (“Regional Director Andrew Villacorta reported yesterday”) from their side to praise their side.. and just yesterday along with this report?.. hmm.

          • So the regional director is reporting on his region.. who is supposed to do that anyway aside from him? Besides the irrigated corn yielding MORE than dryland corn is not a recent finding. I googled it myself because I got curious. It just happened that in this administration, irrigation is FREE.

          • Louie Operio

So that means, the solar powered system that watered this corn is not originally their own strategy?? which, they just inherent from the previous right? read the link below.. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/787624/aquino-visits-3-water-energy-projects-in-central-luzon

          • I doubt the equipments are even accessible esp to small farmers who can’t afford it. Meanwhile the free irrigation is a new policy in this admin.

On a similar case, I remember seeing in the news that the DA in the previous admin procured tractors and equipments but it was just rusting in the DA backyard because the farmers cannot afford the downpayment needed to use it. It was Manny Pinol who revised the policy so that they can be distributed and used by the small farmers.

          • Louie Operio

Remember, setting up equipment’s will take a lot of time (including solar powered system), plus the irrigation system and the cycle of planting corn.. (I myself was from a farming families) with only 6 mos in Admin, its not doable that all of these were done in this period of time only, bottom line, they should only get the credits on their own, that’s why they did not mentioned the entire strategies because it will finally makes sense..

          • You seem to be underestimating the power of FREE. The previous admin could have bought billions worth of equipments and it would be unused because our farmers could barely afford to eat. If Aquino is the president now, those equipments would still be gathering rust and the historic projection of corn export would not have happened. If Aquino admin did not buy it, the Duterte admin will because he is very pro-farmer and the historic corn export will happen maybe 2018 or 2019 or 2020 but it will still happen anyway because the DA secretary is competent and dedicated.

          • Louie Operio

it’s not about power.. it’s about reporting and taking credits for just himself and his boss.. of the thing not entirely created by him..

You are giving him too much credit. Haha. There is an article in Manila Times for this written last year. http://www.manilatimes.net/aquinos-neglect-of-agri-sector-dooms-our-farmers-to-suffer-more-in-the-aec/237781/

“Aquino’s neglect of agri sector dooms our farmers to suffer more in the AEC

ONE of the great sins of President BS Aquino and his people is their neglect of the agricultural sector.

2017 na at 7 months na ang Duterte admin. Kung hindi ka sanay sa bilis ng developments, you should get used to it because more will come.

          • Louie Operio

Giving too much credit from the “Aquino’s”? hmm I did not even mention the name this recently.. about the Editorial, is an opinion from the author who like to lambaste the previous admin, which will not make matters anymore because they are not running the system now.. or maybe just to please the new Admin.. just like those who were paid trolls.. hmm

          • Unggoy

lol remember how many people under DA is now on queue for criminal case? And how many millions involve in these cases? Thats it as of now no money is reported to be stolen or not that we know of yet but given this kind of result maybe nothing yet is stolen and wholly implemented the budget where it is rightly due isnt it? Your skepticism against lack of known reason for these kind of progress is good, but sometimes the solution is the same as before but is properly implemented, no need to discuss any new strategy or actions they did just to achieve it.

          • Ymeon

Please read about Sec. Pinol’s work.

    • eSPiYa

I’m not sure if the current admin did something big to increase the production of corn. Most probable reason why we have excess is the economics saboteurs in the government greatly lessened. Remember the incident with the NFA rice?

      • Louie Operio

Ngek.. first “NFA Rice” the different from corn right? “economic saboteurs” is a big words that it is very general and can be link to any administration, but our economy in general is not bad from the previous admin even the peso is stronger at that time right?, so you cannot directly equate “economic saboteurs” to it..

        • eSPiYa

[Ngek.. first “NFA Rice” the different from corn right?] *facepalm*
You don’t get what I mean? If they did that on our local-produced rice, there’s a high chance that they did that too on other products. Most probable reason why they did that is to increase our imports.

Rice is our staple food so it has high demand. While corn is for food consumption and production of fuel.

Also the value of Peso in forex is a minor thing in gauging our economic power. It is only used in importing goods and services. If we can self-sustain our basic needs then what we will need to import are miscellaneous and luxury stuffs.

          • Louie Operio

What they do? remember you also stated ” you’re not sure” but I agree with you with this, because they did not even stated if they did really do something..

      • Louie Operio

So you are a mind reader now.. again the issue is about grabbing the credits all by themselves, which is not the real case..

Ang sabi sa report ay ((yellow and white corn harvest for 2017 is expected to hit 8.1-million metric tons.)) :)

          • andolini

Wala kang nakita o nagbubulagbulagan ka? Kelan nalagyan ng budget ang programa? kelan na i bid? kelan na i deliver? kelan naipamahagi? hahaha! hanggang ngayon, walang maisagot. 😀

Six years bat walang nangyari?

Six years bat walang nangyari?)

          • andolini

            Show data source

Tanga mo talaga. HAHA

          • andolini

Show me your source… macoy harvest, gma, etc.. and i will show you where in the Malacang files, you can find min. Im sure that your data is imagined, just like the low criminality that duterte is feeding us.

          • andolini

I could habe shown it already but since you came out with a syupid lie of increasing harvests starting from marcos all the way to the present, with the exception of Aquino, it would be nice to ask for your official data. Of course, you have none. Mandaluyong Mental Hospital, where you live, doesn’t have that. And of course, after you have failed, it will be nicest to embarass you some more by showing real data.

Is you your name Digong, by the way? You have made so many false statements that have been proven wrong. Hahaha. The newly delivered FA50’s, which you claim to be for parade purposes only, has just made surgical strikes yesterday.

          • PaidTroll-si-

It came from a very trusted source. The way ang utak mo mag-isip ay proof that you’re an insane person. Read your sentence from Mandaluyong hangang sa huli, you will know that you really are insane…oohhh you wouldn’t realize that coz you’re already insane. HAHAHA

          • andolini

Very trusted and SECRET source! SECRET kasi pag nabulgar, yari ka. Hahahaha!

LOL

          • andolini

Isang check lang talaga. Eh, ang sinasabi mo na reliable source, despite its very very outrageous nature, di mo masabi. Eh ano pa tawag dun. Secret, di ba. O baka mas gustipo mo ang stupid. Ganyan naman ang mga tards, di ba. Mga 75 75 lang. HAHAHA

HAHAHA o ano sige tira. Reminder lang Agri tayo dito LOL

  • Sampaquita
