Environmentalists and netizens expressed their concern by signing a petition against the Nickelodeon’s Underwater Theme Park development in Palawan.
On Tuesday, Viacom International Media Networks (Nickelodeon) unveiled that they are planning to build a 400-hectare underwater resort and theme park in Coron, Palawan.
In a statement emailed to AFP, Ron Johnson, Executive Vice President of Viacom International Media Networks (Nickelodeon), stated, “(Palawan) is known to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world today.”
Alarmed by the announcement, Anna Oposa, the Executive Director of Save Philippines Seas created a petition, which stated “No to Nickelodeon’s Underwater Theme Park in Palawan.”
At around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the campaign reached 68,290 signatures. The number of supporters are continuously increasing for the petition can still be shared through social media websites, such as Facebook and Twitter.
The petition stated, “Contrary to the press statement that the underwater theme park would ‘advocate ocean protection,’ it will accomplish the exact opposite.”
“By building artificial structures, you will undeniably damage and disrupt Palawan’s marine ecosystems — our Last Frontier,” according to the campaign. (Maria Aranza Peralta)
