Planting bamboo along the Aklan River could prevent it from breaching its banks and causing massive flooding.
Aklan Governor Florencio Miraflores said that bamboo is endemic in the province and local observers indicate that it could provide protection to the river.
The Aklan River winds through the towns of Libacao, Madalag, Malinao, Lezo, Banga, Kalibo, Numancia, and Lezo before emptying into the sea.
Miraflores noted how residents fear being hit by flood when never the Aklan River overflows.
“If we plant bamboo, we could minimize the threat of flooding,” Miraflores said.
The Aklan Provincial government is eyeing a partnership with the youth organizations and other organizations for the bamboo planting project.
