More than 5,000 residents are taking refuge in two schools in Mandaluyong City Monday, November 14, after a fire Sunday night in Barangay Addition Hills rendered them homeless and led to two deaths.
As many as 4,355 individuals are staying at the Andres Bonifacio Integrated School (ABIS) gym and 1,210 individuals at Addition Hills Integrated School (AHIS), the Mandaluyong City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) said.
Two died as a result of the fire: a 29-year-old man declared dead on arrival at the Mandaluyong City Medical Center who suffered cardiac arrest, and a 26-year-old woman left behind in the house.
The Bureau of Fire Protection is still investigating the cause of the fire, which reached general alarm—the highest fire alarm and requiring the assistance of all the available fire engines.
As many as 500 houses were gutted in the fire at blocks 34 and 35 of Brgy. Addition Hills, with damages estimated at approximately P10 million.
The fire began at around 7:48 p.m. Sunday, November 13, and was extinguished more than seven hours later, at 3:24 a.m.
