Lift visa requirements for Filipinos, Alvarez urges US

Published

by Genalyn D. Kabiling

The United States should consider lifting visa requirements for Filipino tourists or else the Philippines might be forced to impose similar restrictions to American travelers to the country.

Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez made the call in support of President Duterte’s plan to compel American tourists to get a visa before entering the Philippines.

“If they are not willing to grant us the same privilege, we might also require their citizens to come to our country to apply for a visa in our embassies,” Alvarez said in a media interview in Tokyo.

Alvarez, a member of the President’s delegation to Japan, has bewailed the lack of reciprocity between the Philippines and the United States when it comes to travel.

At present, he said, Filipinos must pay for a tourist visa before being permitted to enter the United States. Americans, on other hand, are free to visit and roam around the country without any visa.

“I want to pursue that idea of the President because normally, we have this reciprocity thing that when your country accepts, let’s say, a citizen of a particular country visa-free so you do the same,” Alvarez said.

“I’m wondering this is the only time that I know that US citizens, as long as they carry their US passport, when they come to the country, they have no visa. Whereas, Filipinos are required to fall in line about as early as 3 a.m. just to apply for a US visa. I think there must be a reciprocity also,” he added.

Alvarez said the Philippines must assert its sovereignty as a nation “if we want others to respect us.”

Alvarez said it was now up to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to implement the new visa scheme for American tourists as proposed by the President last week.

On the issue of Filipinos skipping immigration rules in the US, Alvarez said this was the problem that must be addressed by Washington, not Manila.

In his recent display of anti-US sentiment, the President announced he was considering implementing visa restrictions to American tourists to the Philippines. Duterte resented that the US has been giving Filipinos a hard time with visa restrictions, saying it was payback time.

Ganoon pa man, marami pa ring nakakalusot at nagiging TNT.

      • Tom Cruz

        bopols!

        • Paking

Wow! Di mo naintindihan? Eh..di, ikaw ang BOPOLS!

      • Jubilah

It doesn’t really matter and that’s not the point here. It is the principle of mutual respect between two sovereign nations and reciprocity in this immigration policy should be observed. The problem of TNT by Filipinos is the problem of the Americans. If they require Filipinos to have visa and pay for it then they should also be willing to be required visa and pay for it in coming to the Philippines. What’s wrong with that? That is reciprocity and fairness. The current lop sided visa requirement by the Americans is not only unfair, but worse, it is oppressive.

        • Paking

Principle of mutual respect my A_SS! Almost all countries in the world have “no visa policy” to US but not the Philippines. Why? Don’t you see that many countries do not respect the Philippines as they do to other countries like the US? You are oooozing with PRIDE like Dute(r)te to the point that you do not see where you stand.
Our elders decided to have “no visa policy” for the USA. Did you bother to know why? How will this visa requirement affect the millions of FilAm that visit the country to see their love ones? or you don’t care because of your misplaced PRIDE CHICKEN!

          • Jubilah

Over the years, other countries lost their respect and sense of equality with the Philippines because of people/Filipinos with your kind of thinking and attitude, with very low self-esteem and contented to be called and considered the “little brown brothers” of the Yanks. You should be ashamed of yourself.

          • Paking

There goes your misplaced PRIDE CHICKEN! The Filipinos are not highly respected because of the country’s 3rd world status and your PRIDE (acting like belonging to the 1st world) will further bring us down. Respect is “earned” not “demanded”. You should know your place in the international community and learn to act accordingly. PRIDE with an empty stomach ends up with ALL talk without sense. That is what Dute(r)te is doing which you blindly support. FYI, I was an OFW for more than 30 years managing projects for oil and gas companies with a monthly salary equivalent to 7 figures in Philippine peso. In my line of work, many Westerners report to me. Yet you are quick to judge me of having a very low self-esteem. Hahaha! Like Dute(r)te, your overflowing and misplaced PRIDE CHICKEN is making you nuts! It is your kind that voted Dute(r)te into the presidency who are rightly called “BOBOTANTES” which is the main reason why the Philippines remain a 3rd world country.

          • Jubilah

I didn’t ask who the hell you are and I don’t care. Who does anyway? You are OFW, I am Fil-Aussie and it really didn’t matter. You’re absolutely correct, respect is earned and the bloody Yanks never earned it from us. The degree of respect is not dependent on where you belong – 1st or 3rd world, as you believed. If as a Filipino, you think you just deserve so little of such respect, being a 3rd worldie, then there must be something terribly wrong with you mate. What made you think that Filipinos do not belong to the same level in the international community as the Americans or the Australians, or the Brits? This is what you call sovereignty, which makes all the nations on the level. I’m not judging you as having low esteem, it came from your attitude which was very obvious from the start. So for voting a presidential candidate other than Duterte, you exalt yourself as a smart voter as against the bobotante Duterte supporters. No matter how many Westerners report to you, your low esteem and low respect for self, country and people, will always pull you down as second class, inferior, not equal and “little brown brother” submissive to them. It is precisely that attitude of the Filipino that dragged the country into remaining a 3rd world country for the longest time.

          • Paking

You still don’t know where to position yourself and blindly believe that there’s no difference between the 1st world and the 3rd world and your desire to be equally accorded with respect. I am comfortable with my situation because I earned the respect being accorded to me so your issue of low self-esteem does not apply. Otherwise, I would not be able to do my work satisfactorily. I do not have to struggle like you to demand respect. In fact, I don’t need to think of the amount of respect I am entitled to because it just comes naturally. If you have done enough travelling, you should know that the level of respect accorded to people vary from where they come from. That is why, ” we are paid according to our nationality”. Otherwise, the Filipino should have been accorded the same salary and the same benefits as those from the 1st world countries. Why? You should know, right? In the same manner, you get the kind of respect you deserve based on your nationality and it is something that you can not demand. You can shout and you can jump and ask people to respect you but if you haven’t earned it, you simply won’t get it mate! Certainly, in the international community, there is a big difference on how someone from the 1st world or 3rd world is treated. Your pride and your struggle to try to elevate yourself is someone they call in the Philippines, KSP (Kulang Sa Pansin) and it is indeed, pitiful.

          • Jubilah

You are talking of foreign travels, employment qualifications, social strata etc, which are definitely not the equality and respect I am driving at here. I thought we are discussing respect for sovereignty, rights and independence to self rule. 1st world, 3rd world are man made by the West, where else? One has to do this classification to control and subdue effectively and be able to manipulate. Oh and according to your smart guy self over and above other Filipinos, I am struggling to demand respect, conceitedly assuming that I am demanding respect while you fully earned it. Typical Filipino elitist, show off, wanna be Westener-status-grabbing dream. You ought to be completely liberated and unshackled from your colonial mindset of subservience and dependence on the Westerners, particularly the Yanks.

          • Paking

Hahaha! Stay where you are and conveniently dream of sovereignty, rights and independence to self rule. Once you get out of the country and travel, you might start eating your pride. Of course, you are entitled to hallucinate. Just think of the millions of Filipinos who go to work everyday reporting to a foreign boss and talk to them of equal rights. When the Philippines become progressive and we have independence to self rule, then yes, national pride comes naturally. For now, go back to work and do your job well before your foreign boss kick your ass.

          • Jubilah

With the present Duterte admin, sovereignty, true independence and respect for rights are a dream no more. I have been travelling and out of the country, if you mean the Philippines and I intend to keep my pride intact. Everybody works, no exception. We have bosses and subordinates and having equal rights is a given and will only be asserted with firmness of determination if and when undermined and abused. If all Filipinos are like you, who need to have their country become progressive first, as a pre-requisite, before affirming national pride, well then maybe you’re right. Go ahead back to your OFW duties, do it well and keep on leaking your gringo bosses’ a$$ and forever wait for the progress you’re talking about.

          • Paking

Hahaha! You talk as if Dute(r)te has aready achieved something other than EJK and selling the Philippines to China. Yet you call it sovereignty, true independence and respect for rights. OMG! Anyway, you are entitled to hallucinate and live with your misplaced PRIDE CHICKEN.

          • Jubilah

How pitiful a top-of-line OFW with lots of Westerners as subordinates, as claimed, keeping a blind eye, hearing yet ears refusing to listen and with a loser’s pride un-accepting, denying and rejecting the reality of Duterte’s successes in just 4 months, still leaking sore old wounds. I am entitled to the truth, which is unfortunately hallucination to a crab like you. There’s just not enough space for me to enumerate all the present admin’s accomplishments so far and I urge you please, be fair and honest or at least keep a wait-and-see stance. It’s just very unfortunate that we can’t avoid citing Duterte’s gains without relating them to the previous ones, which make the latter’s supporters furious, rejecting and in denial.

          • Jesse D

You’re just wasting your time…. Let her hallucinate, she does not need any help. Poor girl…. nakakaawa naman…

The American model has offered, and continues to offer, a greater chance for dignity, hope and happiness for more people than any other system.” ……… written by a true Australian.

You are a mountain of dung you know? A true Australian writing about American model? WTF? Who is he fooling? Am just wondering, who could be a true Australian? • Jubilah

What do you mean died with Mark Twain? You are projecting yourself as one and acting exactly like one now. Stop being a Yankee boy and rise up to be on the level with Uncle Sam. Believe me, he is not superior to us and we are not inferior to him.

LET THE PHILIPPINES REQUIRE AMERICANS TO GET PHILIPPINE VISA. ANYHOW, MOST FIL-AM HAVE DUAL CITIZENSHIP WHICH EXEMPTS THEM FROM VISA REQUIREMENTS. BUT ALL AMERICANS WHO COMES HERE FOR VACATION WILL STOP COMING HERE .. SO ITS A WIN-WIN-LOSE-SUFFER SITUATION FOR THE PHILIPPINES. BUT!!!! We will gain the chinese which loves to kick Filipinos out of their own territories. THATS A GOOD TRADE OFF. RIGHT?

          • Jubilah

You got it wrong my man. The point is why can’t they reciprocate? If they have the right to require Visa’s for visitors, we also have the right to require our visitors of Visas. So if we waive this requirement and are willing to forego the fortune that can be generated from this requirement, then they should be willing to waive also. Is it really that hard to understand? Since they are not waiving, then we are now considering requiring Visa to this particular visitor. Why are you quickly concluding that the Yanks will stop coming here? They will understand being reasonable people as you will surely agree and they can very well afford as they are usually reputed to be well off by most Filipinos. Surely, that’s a fair, good and mutually beneficial deal. What’s your problem?

There was a time that Filipinos can travel all over Europe (sans the U.K.) without a visa but now just to visit say Italy, France, etc. Filipinos with Philippine passport need visa (Schengen pass since most of Europe are now united under the E.U.) I have been told that it was the Phiiippines that actually asked the Europeans to require Philippine passport carrying citizen to have visas for their respective countries so as to check the inflow of Domestic Helpers and others looking for better life that the Philippines cannot offer!

    • Paking

Filipinos are known to travel to countries with no visa requirement and try to look for job but in many cases, end up becoming illegal migrants. That is why the visa is imposed in order to qualify the intending tourist and hopefully, grant visa to those with high probability of returning to the Philippines as per the travel itinerary. Nonetheless, many still end-up becoming illegal immigrants. Remove the visa requirement and face the consequence of having more illegal immigrants.

  • beverlygo

          • Jubilah

It doesn’t matter if they are not dual citizens and are using US passports, if they are former Filipinos, which the immigration will know in the passport under place of birth, automatically they are allowed a visa free stay as balikbayan for one year.

          • Bonga Go

Sigurado ka bumoto ako kay duterte? Sinasabi ko wag kana magkialam dito smin. Filipino affairs lang to. Kahit magpatayan o magkasiraan kame rito at least mga filipino kame. Dto kame pinanganak dito kame nagbabayad ng taxes dito kame mamatay. Hindi kame kailangan maging amerikano. We can manage we can survive. Traydor. Mahiya ka sa lolo mo. Ungas.

          • Inigo Montoya

          • Inigo Montoya

Naku “Filipino affairs” daw.

          • Lemar Ram

tama ka indio kami, ikaw GORILLA LOL

          • Inigo Montoya

          • Inigo Montoya

            Moonlight salary = $25/hr. Happy?

          • Bonga Go

            Wala yan maliit yan

          • Inigo Montoya

You get more for moonlighting? As long as it has nothing to do with drugs and EJK, ……. what you do?

          • Bonga Go

Kaya hindi na kelangan maging traydor sa bayan by changing your citizenship. Pwede naman magtrabaho as OFW para kumita.

          • Inigo Montoya

Baka gusto mo?

          • Inigo Montoya

Sa ME ka nalang mag OFW. O kaya sa Europa, sa Africa, sa Russia, sa Japan, sa Korea …etc. Hwag ka nalang pumunta ng USA. Kasi mahihirapan ka sa pagka-TNT doon.

          • Inigo Montoya

            Ok. Di lakihan mo!

          • danaugust68

Sinong lolokohin mo?

      • Bonga Go

Oo mahirapan sila. Anyway mga traydor man sila. Di ba amerikano na sila. Unless dual citizens sila ok lng yon.

        • Paking

          • Bonga Go

          • Inigo Montoya

            BONG GAGO!

          • Inigo Montoya

NANADIDITO AKO. ANO NGAYON. DRUGS NAMAN ANG PAGUSAPAN NATIN? DAHIL WALA KANG BUHAY HWAG KAMING ISAMA SA KATULAD MONG MGA ALIPIN NI DIOTERTE.

          • Bonga Go

Wag kana bumalik dito. Wag kna makialam dito smin.

          • Bonga Go

          • Bonga Go

          • Inigo Montoya

Hoy Tsikwa kahit little brown monkey lang kami, at least hindi kami little jaundice monkey katulad mong communista halik sa witpo ng Tsina.

          • Bonga Go

          • Inigo Montoya

            BONG GAGO PA RIN!

          • Jesse D

You’re such an idiot. You can’t even write properly in Pilipino. We became naturalized American citizens because it is what we want, not “traydors” as you call it.

The Filipinos had been independent since 1946, that’s 70 years and had not fixed a thing. The Philippines is still in the pits.

          • Jesse D

WOW! You really are showing how little education you have had….. Nakakaawa ka naman, taong kanto…. But I admire your tenacity trying to be coherent enough to make your point which is pointless. I almost feel proud of you, Amoeba> (one-celled organism).

          • Bonga Go

Wow. Galing mo walng loyalty sa bayan mo. Traydor ka. Nagpalit ka pa ng citizenship. Galing mo.

          • Jesse D

Hello Amoeba! I’m almost feeling sorry for you, miserable one-celled organism…. Then again, I’m having fun playing with your silly little mind…. I can almost see you drooling, pacing, getting cross-eyed, mumbling, smoke coming out of your ears and talking to yourself to frenzy like the psycho you are….

It’s unethical to make fun of psychologically unstable people but what the heck, I’m having fun, at your expense obviously. You’re so shallow and predictable, dimwit you are. I’ll continue to make fun of you. I’ll feel sorry for you later, but for now, I’m having fun predicting what comes out of your amoeba brain….. Ooopss, sorry, amoebas don’t have brains… Just remember, you brought this upon yourself, so you highly deserve to be treated as such…. Gets mo, Amoeba?

          • Bonga Go

Gag0 traydor.

I hate to be cruel but you really need to be called out that you are an idiot. That’s the only thing you’d understand. Too bad that your country is populated by so many people like you, that’s why the Philippines is still in the pits, and will continue to be in he pits until its people become educated.

Can’t you see that you are advertising to everyone who reads your post how stupid you are? I feel sorry for you. You are waste of time, you are wasting oxygen….

I’m sorry but there’s no cure for idiocy, especially when the idiot does not understand that he is an idiot. That IDIOT is YOU.

          • Bonga Go

Hou ulull. Traydor. Musta naman si trump. Uuwi kna sa pilipinas little brown monkey.

          • Jesse D

“Uuwi” means you go home to, because you live there. Why do you keep advertising to everyone that you’re an uneducated idiot? Have pity on yourself.

          • Bonga Go

Hoy traydor. Tae.

          • Inigo Montoya

            BONG GAGOOOO!

          • Jesse D

Inggit ka lang. So what’s wrong in speaking English, dimwit?

          • Ling li

        • Inigo Montoya

SA PANGALAN MO LANG BONG-GAGO KA NA.

      • Lumad01

Tuwa c renata reyes makapunta siya sa usa.tagal na iyon pangarap niya bigo makakuha ng us visa.at balak mag tnt kaya laging una una sa rallying contract usa.hek hek hek hek.

      • Ling li

Ibig sabihin, lahat ng American Citizen (whether born or not born in the USA) ay kailangang kumuha ng Philippine Visa upang makapunta sa Pilipinas…..intiyende

      • curatolo

Hangga’t mayroon kang dugong Filipino, nasaan ka man at madalang man, lagi kang interesadong maka-bisita sa bansa. Bakit?

  • usmcret

Alvarez is regurgitating an invalid argument. Americans (and all foreigners), do get a visa (tourist) when entering the Philippines. The reason America requires visa-before-travel, is that the US has problems with excessive immigration, leading to a strain on public services. The Philippines in contrast, offers few public services – even to it’s own people – and none whatsoever to foreigners.

Also, the Philippines is the birth-place of the Abu Sayaf, NPA, MILF and other terrorist groups that have an inherent hatred of the west. With a corrupt government system, it is very difficult to accurately identify individuals wishing to travel – hence a rigorous interview process.

With that said, I think it would be a great idea to have a valid registration service that pre-qualifies Pinoys for visa-free travel. 99% of Pinoys would be very welcome in America.

    • redsnapper1

Americans don’t have to get a tourist visa to enter the Philippines. America has set it up so that Americans can go to just about any country WITHOUT a vison. Example – Mexico, Italy, Philippines, Canada, Australia, etc.

      • Paking

The Philippine government decided with a “no visa requirement policy” to a US citizen. How then could you claim that America has set it up?

Do you mean to say, PH is more a risk of a terrorist country than US?
What about those crazy converts from US, who enter PH, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and cause terrorism by taking advantage of no requirement of visa-before-travel advantages?

      Duterte is right,
      No reciprocity, F***K off!!!

All countries must follow the initiative of Duterte, so that US and other arrogant nations will open their eyes!!

Everyone who travels to these countries is not a terrorist, or a potential migrants, as they fear.

Right to travel between nations is a right of all citizens in this era of globalization.

Meanwhile, I would appreciate Duterte allowing Indians to have the same reciprocity we have extended to Filipinos.

      Mabuhay!!

        Typical Dutertard. Violent and negative…

  • anthony

  • Jomaking

There are 38 countries that are eligible for visa-free entry into the US by visa waiver program.
In our region, the East Asia – Japan, South Korea, Brunei, Singapore, and Taiwan are included but unfortunately not their “little brown brother.”

    • redsnapper1

      Precisely.

  • Anne

  • Paul Parenas

“Korea is still the top spending market with visitor spending amounting to Php 6.29 billion. U.S.A. ranked second with Php 4.39 billion expenditure followed by Canada with Php 1.46 billion, overtaking Australia which provided Php 1.39 billion to take the fourth spot. Completing the top five spending markets is Japan with visitor spending of Php1.16 billion for the month.”

That’s 2015 tourist expenditures in the Philippines. Americans spent P4.39 billion, second only to the Koreans P6.29 billion. PGong cannot afford to lose that kind of income if fewer American tourist visits the country because of visa requirement…….

    • Jubilah

Maybe you cannot afford to lose that kind of income from the Americans but speak for yourself not for Pres. Duterte or the Filipinos. The president knows the consequences and all these risks were all calculated. There is always a time of reckoning. Mutual respect between sovereign nations necessitates reciprocity.

      • Paul Parenas

“Mutual respect between sovereign nations necessitates reciprocity.” In a nation of equals! You are damn right! But the U S of A and the Philippines are not equals. The U S of A is a 1st world country while the Philippines is a third world. If you allow tourist from the Philippines to come with no visa requirement, I assure you non of the Filipinos will come back. And only the rich Chinese will remain in the Philippines. Is that what you want?

        • Jubilah

There’s no point discussing further with a loser like you, shamelessly admitting that you’re not equal and therefore inferior than the Yanks. Be a slave forever and forget about “THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL”.

          • Paul Parenas

All men are created equal? Live with that idea, and you’ll be a bottom feeder the rest of your life. Use your brain a little bit: If you work for someone, are you equal to your employer? Definitely not!

          • Jubilah

It is most stupid for one to compare between employer-employee equality and equality as discussed here about sovereignty, independence, mutuality and reciprocity policies of nations. But even with employer-employee equality and relationships, it’s always been changing. What about this reference, in answer to your off-topic post.
“Once upon a time, everyone accepted that the boss called the shots. However, in the last 15 years, employees have begun to gain more power in the workplace. As employees demand flexible hours, work-life balance and freedom in the office, the employer’s word is no longer the law.
What does this all mean? With 74 percent of employees ranking benefits as most important for retention and 68 percent indicating management climate is another important retention factor, employers have had to adapt: 72 percent of employers offer flex time and 51 percent offer telecommuting, according to Spherion’s 2013 Emerging Workforce Study.”
Are you actually using your brain? Your “definitely not” should have been “maybe” at worst.

          • Paul Parenas

You remind me of a dog chasing its own tail. Listen to yourself! What you are spouting just proves my point? You claim “THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL!” I say not so! You and I cannot be equal. You talk nonsense. I don’t……….

          • Jubilah

You too remind me of the chicken bad mouthing the pig as ugly, filthy and smelly but chicken follows pig and gluttons every droppings left behind by piggy. If that’s what you believe, that you and I cannot be equal, well, no problem with me but that doesn’t make my talk nonsense and yours full of wisdom. How conceited is that?

  • underthePhilippineSun

it is a good proposal by speaker alvarez.. now, let us see what the US action is…

after americans elected a new president by november 2016, i think it will be a new atmosphere…

    • redsnapper1

160 dollars times 779,600 American tourists last year. Magkano yun?

  • Aubb

Philippines should do same with every country, that treats their citizens like Americans do as of now.

All countries take note of this bold step taken by Duterte.

    • Inigo Montoya

BOLD STEP NA ANO? BOLD STAR SIGURO ANG IBIG MONG SABIHIN, DI BA?.

  • Yolanda Santos

Stupid demand by Duterte’s lapdog Alvarez. The US has the right to protect its country from all economic migrants seeking jobs and better living standards. If the US lifts visa restriction for Filipinos, then half of Philippines’ 104 million people would be moving to the US in no time at all seeking better life.

Whereas, there would would just be a few Americans, if any, who would want to work in the Philippines because of its slave- rate of pays. Out-of-work Americans would rather collect welfare checks at home rather than seek employment here. By imposing visa requirements on Americans, the loser is the Philippines’ tourism industry. Potential American tourists, which make up the second biggest source of Philippine visitors at 779,000 last year, would just go to visa-free Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

    • John

might be true Yolanda, but that’s the Problem of US immigration to enforce their law. The main thing here is “respect” as a true ally. Kahit man lang symbolism na irespeto tayo.

      • Joey

The issue is when you watch the Filipino channels many of ads and programs are focused on avoiding immigration laws. The Filipinos in the US who overstay visas are ruining it for everyone else.

      • Inigo Montoya

So why not just do it instead of trying to make a big fuss about it. That why we lost the sugar quota during the Marcos administration because Macoy thought he could threaten the US with sugar we supply the US, without thinking that US was grateful he did that. Now we are talking about killing our tourism business and our prospective foreign investors. THINK ABOUT IT GUYS.

      • Inigo Montoya

Respect in what? Make your point clear. What respect?

        • John

-Give to us what is due to us…YOu American had your share of the ‘fat” of the lands…

          • Inigo Montoya

What is due to you? Do you mean handouts? AIDS? A helping hand? A shoulder to cry on? A VISA? A ticket to Disneyland? You want free burgers with fries and a coke? WHAT? WTF is “fat”?

          • John

well, you are definitely ignorant of Philippine history! Share me your email and ill tell you!

          • Inigo Montoya

What is there in the Philippine history that was not written by Americans? Now who is ignorant?

          • John

Whar? Do you think that all in the history were written by Americans? Try reading Renato Constantino book for one! And add to it that American history started when? 1600’s pr 1700’s? while we are part of the Madjapahit empire in the 1200’s. So whose older your American civilization or ours?

          • Inigo Montoya

Maybe Renato Constantino (RC) and your ancestors where the slaves Madjapahit Empire. Well thats yours and his ancestors, SORRY NOT MINE.
I will tell you my story not written by RC. I was born and raise in the Iloilo, which makes me an Ilongohanon.
Pannai, Panai is a Buddhist Monarchial kingdom that existed around 8th to 13th century located on east coast of Northern Sumatra. It was located on the Barumun River and Panai River valleys, today located in Labuhan Batu, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Because of the scarcity of inscriptions and historical records, this kingdom is among the mysterious and least known in Indonesian history.
Despite the lack of local historical records, 16 Buddhist Vajrayana temples were discovered. Experts suggest that the existence of the temples is related to the Kingdom of Pannai. The place is most probably a religious-complex for warrior-monks of and had a key role, being located mid-way in the Strait of Malacca in policing the trade within the area and repelling invading forces as well as providing spiritual guidance to any pilgrim from China, India or within the archipelago.

The state of Pannai, according to inscriptions found in India, fell after a surprise attack from the rear. Pannai did not suspect an attack from a Chola occupied Srivijaya, the mandala’s capital.

Panay island in the Philippines is said to have been named after the state of Pannai, of which Visayan (descendants of Srivijayans) oral legends recount that their 10 Datus or Datuks (in Malay) that transited from Borneo, rebelled against the Rajah named Makatunao. Thus, mirroring the situation in Pannai-proper which was fell by the Hindu Chola dynasty, to which, the datus of the Visayan legend, the Maragtas, refused to bow to. Instead of bowing to the Maharajah’s and his puppet rajah’s domination, set out to other islands, together with their constituent nobles, soldiers and scholars. The KEDATUAN OF MADJA-AS may be thus considered as the successor-nation to the Pannai-state.
Interestingly, according to Visayan legends and epics, the people of the island of Panay and the Visayans of the Philippines, trace their ancestry from the state of Pannai which the island of Panay is said to have been named after. The Visayans themselves being descendants of the Sri-Vijayan datus who refused to bow to the Tamil occupation of Maharajah Rajendra Chola or the Hindu rule of the Rajahs that came thereafter

          • John

Bro . You are Filipino, I thought you were American. Thus, i rest my case!

          • Jesse D

Did you just ate your crow? Isn’t it embarrassing to present yourself lecturing someone but you get lectured yourself? Moral of the story: Do not argue a pointless case, it will only show how ignorant you are. Oooops!

      SIGE NGA!!!

  • nizon

  • lufthansa49

Uto uto Alvarez.Tourism sec tahimil ka

  • Inigo Montoya

THE UNITED STATES SHOULD NEVER EVER LIFT VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR FILIPINOS EVER. ANG PILIPINAS NAMAN KONG GUSTO NATIN MAY VISA ANG MGA KANO DITO, GAWIN NATIN PARE WALA NG DALDAL NG DALDAL. TAPOS!

  • Freedom-of-Expression

I respected Alvarez clamor with US for Filipinos to enter US without visa but that is a very ridiculous notion ever made by DU30 minion in congress. All countries in the world including those western states and closed allies were not given exemption entering US except under diplomatic status. First, Homeland Security announcement of Filipino jihads and terrorists and those who will over stay. They have enough Filipinos in US undocumented but enjoying US way of living. Nevertheless I am giving Alvarez the benefit of a doubt and good luck to him.

  • Jonathan Ramon V Samson

  • Jay Cee

Good! Pwede na akong mag TNT. SARAP!

  • Inigo Montoya

If I have the opportunity to tell this Pantylayon Alvarez, I would tell him, “BS and screw you”. Why should the US do such thing. He speaks about visa restriction for US citizen without even looking at the Philippine Visa requirements. US personnel can only stay for 21 days in the Philippines without visa. After that they have to register themselves at their local Philippine Immigration Office for extension or whatever. Now If he wants to remove that “freebie rule” for Americans from our immigration rules, then he is free to do so. No one is stopping him. BUT THERE WILL BE NO CHANGE ON VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR FILIPINOS ENTERING THE USA. If general de la Rosa can line up to get a visa from the US Embassy, so is everybody else.

  • Jesse D

Americans are not stupid to lift the visa requirements for the Filipinos wanting to visit the US. America already has too many ILLEGAL ALIENS. If America does not screen the Filipinos wanting to visit here, then most Filipinos will pawn everything they own to buy their one way ticket to America and will not return back to the Philippines.

Reciprocity, my ass! Do you see thousands of Americans illegally overstaying in the Philippines?

Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is an idiot.

  • Jesse D

Duterte and the idiot Pantaleon Alvarez can pass any law they want, requiring Americans to obtain a Philippine visa before visiting the Philippines.

Heck, if Duterte and Alvarez really want to make their point, they should pass a law allowing every nationality to visit the Philippines without a visa AND requiring ONLY THE AMERICANS to obtain a visa before visiting the Philippines. There, point made.

But they should not expect America to drop the visa requirements for the Filipinos.

  • MIKA & ME

It’s usually not the Americans who come and overstay. it’s the Filipinos who go and hide forever – that’s the real disparity.

  • Jesse D

Pantaleon Alvarez is an idiot. He has no understanding of the reasons why America has to screen the Filipinos wanting to travel to the US. We have enough the illegal aliens here already. We don’t need any more TNT’s. Gets mo, Alvarez?

  • Bill-Of-Rights

Alvarez as speaker of the house appeal to US for lifting visas for Filipinos is so stupid, baseless and dellusional, he is talking without thinking in similar manner portrayed by his benafactor supremo DU30. US and European nations are threaten by home grown jihadist, refugees and over stayed immigrant and despite of tight and strict immigration security processes terrorists still managed to slip through into US. Now how speaker Alvarez can stand a chance for Filipinos entering US without visa? Was he clever or clueless?

  • Cecilia Sy

YOU ARE SHOWING YOUR IGNORANCE ALVAREZ !!

TELL YOUR BOSS TO STOP BULLYING THE UNITED STATES.

IF U.S. LIFTS THE VISA REQUIREMENT, DO YOU THINK THERE
WOULD BE ANY FILIPINO LEFT IN THIS COUNTRY ?

    STUPID.

  • ac378864 .

  • LASurg702

Not going to happen Mr. Speaker. Americans come to the Philippines for business, they don’t stay. Filipinos come to the US to stay forever. What the US must do is to restrict immigrant Filipinos coming to the US that are low educated and over 30 years of age.

  • lufthansa49

  • danaugust68

All Filipinos who goes on TNT should be put to death. No more AttyGarfinkle.

  • lufthansa49

Uto uto isipin mo muna bago sinasabi.

  • Yolanda Santos

Alvarez is wasting his breath begging for the US to lift its visa requirement for Filipino visitors. Listen to this Pantaleon – the US requires visas for all poor countries, especially for a country with NPA, Abu Sayyaf and MILF terrorists.

The US doesn’t care if PH requires Americans to secure visas to visit the Philippines – those Americans can visit visa-free countries like Singapore, Thailand, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia instead.

  • akong

come on! Free US VISA for Filipino won’t happen even though I like that idea. Speaker Alvarez is making some noise but to me is non-sense idea.

  • Kanto kabinet

Just impose the VISA to US and watch your tourism spiral down.

  • Sy Neil

I support this idea.Philippines is a long time ally of USA but why USA is restricting VISA requirements to PH. USA should allow no visa for PH citizens and if filipinos overstayed or become a TNT in US, its up to US to ban these filipino TNTs from their country down to their kins.

  • Penance

Oh, go right ahead…see who suffers more from that. The foreigner pays 3k pesos every other month to stay here. Filipinos don’t have to pay anything to stay in the US. But hey..you want to give away that 3k per month per foreigner? You want to throw away all those foreigners coming here spending USD on your women and small businesses? Go ahead. I didn’t think a 3rd world country’s economy could get worse than it is now, but I’m thinking you’ll find a way to prove me wrong.

  • Lemar Ram

you are right Mr. Alvarez, let’s require them tourist visas whey they come here and LIFT tourist visa to filipinos going to USA….it’s just fair, right?

  • Juan Dela Cruz

    Business is business…Respect.

  • Marzan Rodesan

PATI BA NAMAN USA DINADAAN SA PANANAKOT NI ALVAREZ? SINO BA SA AKALA NIYA ANG SARILI NIYA. AKALA BA NIYA ATAT NA ATAT MAKAPUNTA NG PINAS ANG MGA AMERIKANO? LALO LANG NIYANG TINATABOY ANG MGA POSSIBLE INCOME GENERATOR NG BANSA.

Its estimated that 4 million Filipinos live in the USA, half of whom are illegal entrants who have “overstayed their visas”. How many Americans come to the Philippines and overstay their visas? Probably none.
If President Duterte wants to stop Americans coming to the Philippines and spending money then say so, bro ……. no problem.

I agree..an eye for an eye..a tooth for a tooth..kung ano trati ng kano..ganon din ang trato natin sa knaila….mao mano lang po..patas ang laban..hindi one sided….I agree to gibe American a visa to enter Philippines….we look like stupid…porke puti sila? no way Joe!!

  • Yolanda Santos

It’s crazy for Pantalooney Alvarez to bluff the US that PH will require American tourists visas if the US does not lift visa restrictions for Filipinos. American tourists will just bypass the Philippines and go to Thailand or Malaysia instead; PH tourism will be the loser.

Even with visa requirements, close to a million Filipino TNTs are overstaying in the US.

  • Manny Santos

Alvarez is always out of the Universe palagi sa sinasabi ,,sa hirap ng pilipinas at sa gulo edi lahat na yan nagpuntahan sa America at di na bumalik ..kaya naghihigpit na ang America ay sa dami ng illegal na andun na …mga pinoy pag ka nagkaroon na nag visa di na bumabalik sa pinas ,buti ka mga inanakan mo at mga anak mo sa labas ay mapera sa kurakot mo at pede silang magbalik balik sa america ..bka naman pag nasa america na eh ayaw ng magtrabaho at hapi hapi at balik sa pinas kasi suportado mo naman ng limpak limpak mong nakurakot

On one hand, Honorable President Duterte tells America to leave so he can get closer to China and Russia, and on the other hand the Speaker asks for visa free travel to America?
Kick sand in the face of America and wonder why America doesn’t open its doors?
